EDUCATION PROGRAMS
The New Orleans Jazz Institute
The New Orleans Jazz Institute is a partnership between NOJO and the University of New Orleans (UNO) that links UNO’s strengths in Jazz education with the NOJO’s professional and performance expertise. NOJI provides year-round music education and training for children ages 8-17, and serves to promote creative excellence and best practices in Jazz composition, performance, scholarship, importation, exportation and education. Through NOJI, we are able to ensure that the rich musical heritage of New Orleans not only continues, it advances.
Project Prodigy
Through NOJI, our partnership with UNO, Project Prodigy is a summer music camp for New Orleans public school students in 4th - 8th grade that enriches musical skills and nourishes an appreciation of the arts. The camp is led by six instructors, all of whom are professional music teachers in Orleans Parish Public Schools. Local musicians support their education by providing hands-on demonstrations. Throughout the year, students participate in a series of field trips to support learning about t New Orleans music culture. Breakfast, lunch and transportation are included. The camp runs from June through mid-July, ending with a concert for friends and family. The enrollment fee is $50.

Saturday Music School (SMS)
Through NOJI, our partnership with UNO, SMS offers a comprehensive music curriculum that features applied music instruction; quality instructors from UNO, NOJI and NOJO, and contracted artistic personnel; group lessons for beginning students; private applied music lessons for more advanced students; music appreciation and beginning theory classes for all; and performance opportunities at NOJO hometown concerts and festivals such as French Quarter Fest. Aspiring SMS students must audition and exhibit core abilities. SMS is free of charge to all participants.
Jazz Archive
Through NOJI, our partnership with UNO, NOJO is in the development stages of a Jazz Archive honoring the Jazz Masters of New Orleans.
Jazz Curriculum
Through NOJI, our partnership UNO, and a partnership with the Capital One-New Beginnings Charter Schools Network, NOJO is designing a Jazz Curriculum that will initially be taught to Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students. The curriculum examines the sounds of Jazz, contributors to Jazz and Jazz instruments.
