NOJO’s first building project, The Peoples Health New Orleans Jazz Market, will open in April 2015 as a performing arts venue and Jazz community center in Central City New Orleans. The Jazz Market will feature music education experiences for all ages, a New Orleans Jazz Archive, tributes to current and past Jazz Masters, and performances by Irvin Mayfield, NOJO and other renowned musicians. For more information, please contact Sarah Bell (firstname.lastname@example.org).
HOMETOWN CONCERT SERIES
NOJO is the first and only professional Jazz organization to create ticketed Jazz concert seasons in the city that created the music. NOJO produces 8-10 concerts by Grammy-winning Irvin Mayfield and NOJO locally each year. The Spring 2014 Hometown Concert Series featured performances at The New Orleans City Council Chambers, NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility, and The Central City Fire Station.
Jazz music was born in the City of New Orleans, and NOJO shares this tradition throughout the country as a member of Columbia Artists Management Incorporated. NOJO has headlined all of America’s major performing arts venues and clubs, including Carnegie Hall, The Chicago Theatre, Benaroya Hall in Seattle, Ravinia Festival in Chicago, The Dakota Club in Minneapolis, and Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.
NOJO enjoys a proud tradition of hosting a National Gala each year in distinct cities and historic venues across the United States. In 2012, NOJO’s 10th Anniversary was celebrated at New York City’s iconic Carnegie Hall with special guests Aaron Neville, Branford Marsalis and Dee Dee Bridgewater. In 2013, the entire NOJO Big Band and staff traveled via the Spirit of New Orleans train from New Orleans to Chicago to perform at The Chicago Theatre with special guests Allen Toussaint, Kurt Elling and Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The fall of 2014 will mark the first time that NOJO will travel westward for their annual Gala, planned for November in San Francisco.
IRVIN MAYFIELD & THE NOJO JAZZ JAM
Every Wednesday at Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse in The Royal Sonesta Hotel New Orleans, NOJO curates and hosts the “NOJO Jam” featuring Irvin Mayfield, NOJO musicians and special guests. Each month, NOJO Jam Musical Director Derek Douget selects a Jazz Icon whose music is featured. The “NOJO Jam” also serves as a mentoring and professional development opportunity for young musicians.
Featured Jazz Masters have included:
| January: Harold Battiste and Alvin Batiste | February: Sonny Rollins | March: Charlie Parker
| April through June: Freddie Hubbard | July: John Coltrane | August: Bud Powell
NOJI MASTERS SERIES
Through NOJI, our partnership with the University of New Orleans (UNO), NOJO commissions three professional Jazz musicians each semester to create and perform music based on certain themes. Each piece is premiered at Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse, then performed within the community at museums, festivals, libraries, and other venues. Additionally, NOJI hosts a combined performance and a Jazz Studies Master Class at UNO. (MORE INFO)
